Abstract

CHILAND, Colette  and  DOUEK, Sybil Safdie. The construction of gender identity during teenage years. Rev. bras. psicanál [online]. 2014, vol.48, n.4, pp. 175-185. ISSN 0486-641X.

After some observations related to terminology (sex, gender, identity), a discussion on the construction of gender identity up to adolescence shall be briefly resumed. The passage from a certain androgyny of childhood to the completeness of a sexuated identity sometimes occurs with a few trivial difficulties; it is also the moment in which the potential access to a complete and fecund sexuality confirms or develops the sexual orientation. With no disorder of sexual development, some (transsexual) teenagers refuse their attributed gender, which is their biological gender, and request a hormonal-surgical transformation. Some teenagers present a gender identity issue related to their disorder of sexual development. A "transgender" movement has developed in the heart of our culture which discusses the matter of gender and goes as far as refusing any sexual distinction, exposing problems which are no longer medical, but social.

Keywords : identity; gender; sex; transsexuality; transgender; intersex.
