Abstract

MORGENSTERN, Ada  and  GUELLER, Adela J. Stoppel de. About further work on the subjective constitution of twins. Rev. bras. psicanál [online]. 2015, vol.49, n.3, pp. 53-67. ISSN 0486-641X.

We have received child and adolescent twins in our practice more and more frequently. Although complaints and symptoms are typical of the age and similar to anyone else's, we come across particular features in their subjectification path, such as: specific difficulties in acquiring a singularity, in detaching themselves from someone that is so close that muddles up with a double, or in forming narcissism and reaching the place of imaginary phallus. All these operations seem to require further work on the subjective constitution of twins and parents. In this paper, we intend to think about this additional work, which may need a psychoanalyst's intervention. To that end, we will follow the pioneering work of Dorothy Burlingham, a psychoanalyst who dedicated decades to this field of study. Her work has not been published in Portuguese yet.

Keywords : twinship; fraternal function/ brotherly function; phallus; double; Burlingham.
