Abstract

CASEIRO, Sandra Luiza Nunes. Essay on some abstractions: our symbolic universe - the valence of word. Rev. bras. psicanál [online]. 2015, vol.49, n.4, pp. 90-100. ISSN 0486-641X.

This paper is the author's attempt to present and compare some aspects of Cassirer's and Bion's ideas of the existence and the constitution of the symbolic system in the human mind. The author also writes about common aspects found in both of their ideas. More specifically, the purpose of this paper is to find and rescue the concept of symbol in Bion's work Learning from experience. This paper also aims to emphasize the complexity of this concept and its importance for the complicated psychoanalytic work. In addition, the author presents some thoughts on the difficulties in obtaining and expanding the symbolic universe. Furthermore, she writes about some features of our current culture that seem not to help in this development process, at least, in the way we are used to think of it.

Keywords : psychoanalysis; symbol; symbolic universe; language; words.
