Abstract

LIMA, Luiz Tenório Oliveira. The body in psychoanalysis: its specificity from the point of view of the history of ideas. Rev. bras. psicanál [online]. 2016, vol.50, n.2, pp. 15-29. ISSN 0486-641X.

By using the point of view of the history of ideas, this paper attempted to highlight the relationship between the emerging psychoanalytic field and an essential epistemological issue for philosophy and science in the first half of the 19th century. Especially in relation to the psychologic field, that issue has been recognized in the relationship between soul, spirit, mind, and nature; in other words, between body and mind. Starting mainly from Franz Brentano's contribution, the author's purpose was to emphasize the path of three thinkers, who had coincidentally been in touch with Brentano: Husserl and Heidegger (two philosophers) and Freud. Lastly, the author demonstrated Husserl, Heidegger, and Freud - maybe not by coincidence - conceived entirely original thoughts on the issue of the relationship between mind and body. Those thoughts had an important role in the breach between the 19th century scientific tradition and the 20th century science and philosophy.

Keywords : psychoanalysis; phenomenology; philosophy; positivism; mind; body.
