Being pregnant, taking care of babies, becoming father or mother is always and everywhere an activity that touches people and affects their intimacy and bounds, such as couple, family, society. Studies show the importance of these very first moments in order to establish a good quality relationship with their children. As such, parent/child dysfunctions and violence against children may be avoided. To that end, parents must be respected and supported whatever way they choose to parent. Cultural and social diversity, therefore, needs to be respected. It is up to us to support all the parental competencies as shown by parents. It is not our job to judge nor weaken them. We should never want to normalize these parents nor force them to be the kind of parents we are and we think we are supposed to be. Transcultural clinic combines psychoanalysis and anthropology, and may provide us better tools to deal with all these parents who belong to social and cultural minorities.
