Abstract

CABRAL, Paulo Emilio Pessoa Lustosa  and  LOFFREDO, Ana Maria. Boredom in the society of all work and all play: the attempt to avoid boredom as a typical display of the same phenomenon. Rev. bras. psicanál [online]. 2017, vol.51, n.3, pp. 37-52. ISSN 0486-641X.

The interchange between lack of interest and fidgetiness observed in boredom will be in the scope of this text. The hypothesis is that this cycle manifest itself in a continuous and periodic way through solutions such as work and the search for distraction. The attempt to escape from the sensation of boredom and the feeling that oneself is taken by it are both outcomes of the same instinctual dynamic. The medieval phenomenon of acedia presents itself as a modern day problem when one observes the agitation, inertia, and lack of interest displayed in the impossibility to stop. The repetitive actions either as a trace of industrial labor or of useless distractions point out the impairment of dream and creativity. Leisure and relaxation are themselves impossible since the quality time imitates working time. This statement means that when one avoids boredom often demises into boredom itself.

Keywords : boredom; acedia; leisure time.
