Abstract

SANTOS, Rodrigo Afonso Nogueira. Psychoanalytic horizons in debate: notes on the history of psychoanalysis in Minas Gerais. Rev. bras. psicanál [online]. 2017, vol.51, n.4, pp. 201-215. ISSN 0486-641X.

The purpose of this paper is to present and debate a range of elements of the history of psychoanalysis in Minas Gerais. The author describes a path that started from the first psychoanalytic publication in 1925 and ended in 1963, with the opening of an institution for psychoanalytic training. Throughout this trajectory, the author emphasizes the arrival of psychoanalysis in Minas Gerais as a moment in which references of psychoanalysis circulated freely among psychiatrists, artists, teachers, and priests. It happened between 1925 and 1932, the year in which the Pestalozzi Society of Minas Gerais was founded. This fact marked a significant change in the ways of thinking about psychoanalysis, which, since then, has been considered a specialized area of knowledge. Finally, the author discusses the bases of the first psychoanalytic institution of Minas Gerais, which was founded by a priest and psychoanalyst in 1963. According to the author, it is fundamental to take into consideration the role of Catholicism as the main source of resistance to psychoanalysis. This fact has deeply marked this history.

Keywords : history of psychoanalysis; Minas Gerais; Catholicism; psychiatry; education.
