Abstract

MOLIN, Eugênio Canesin Dal. Fresh old news from Ferenczi about how dreams work: the dream as a Kur, the dream as a gyógyászat. Rev. bras. psicanál [online]. 2020, vol.54, n.1, pp. 211-230. ISSN 0486-641X.

This text discusses a conference written by Sándor Ferenczi in 1931 about the function of dreams and its relation to trauma. Ferenczi's wish was to read the conference at the 12th International Congress of Psychoanalysis, supposed to happen that year in Interlaken, Switzerland. The congress, however, was postponed and a part of the conference's content was later spread among other texts in which Ferenczi rethinks the concept of trauma and its clinical significance. In this article the author makes use of the Freud/Ferenczi correspondence to contextualize the originality of Freud's Hungarian follower regarding his theorizations about different aspects in the function of dreams. In the 1931 conference, as well as in this article, the dream work of a patient, used by Ferenczi as a clinical example, is observed as a process where traumatic experiences and not mastered sensory impressions can be repeated in the attempt of a better working-through for the dreamer; in a process that resembles an effort of self-treatment, of self-Kur.

Keywords : dreams; trauma; Ferenczi; history of psychoanalysis; repetition.
