the article's author works as a supervisor of medical residents in psychiatry, in their obligatory psychotherapy internship. Through a clinical case, the subject of obligatoriness is developed, and then discussed in the light of the official document of the Education Ministry which regulates the minimum requirements for medical training in Brazil.
