Abstract

ABRAO, Jorge Luís Ferreira. Virgínia Leone Bicudo: building and diffusing psychoanalysis in Brazil. Rev. bras. psicanál [online]. 2020, vol.54, n.4, pp. 230-249. ISSN 0486-641X.

ABSTRACT This article emerged to discuss Virgínia Bicudos's initiatives as a pioneer of psychoanalysis in Brazil. Starting with a bibliographic research and interviews, a professional path of the character, her biography, was reconstituted. Virgínia Bicudo was born into a poor family and found, in her intellectual ability, a way to overcome all the prejudice and achieve professional success. After completing the old course for teachers, she became a sociologist and started studying psychoanalysis as a way to relieve personal suffering. She found in Freud's discipline a beneficial place to deal with personal and professional demands. She stood out as a founder of São Paulo's Brazilian Society of Psychoanalysis, Brasília's Brazilian Society of Psychoanalysis, the Journal of Psychoanalysis and the Brazilian Psychoanalysis Magazine.

Keywords : Virgínia Bicudo; history of psychoanalysis; biography.
