Abstract

PRADO, Luiz Eduardo. Stalemate and solution: Anna Freud and Melanie Klein's controversies. The origins of the Middle Group. Rev. bras. psicanál [online]. 2021, vol.55, n.3, pp. 191-205. ISSN 0486-641X.

From the translation of The Freud-Klein Controversies, the author studies their historical realities divided between Administrative Assemblies and Scientific Discussions, where the "Kleinians" were able to discuss their main theses. The author shows how the Controversies reached an impasse, when Edward Glover thought it would be possible to ally with Anna Freud to expel Melanie Klein from the British Psychoanalytic Society. What united the two Viennese women however was stronger. And other psychoanalysts did not agree with exclusions. James Strachey and a few others then laid the foundations of what was to become the Middle Group.

Keywords : Melanie Klein; Anna Freud; Edward Glover; James Strachey; Middle Group.
