The institutional practice of research is one of the aspects in which paraguayan psychology shows a clear deficit. Psychological research means the application of the techniques, strategies, resources and methodologies that are derived from current psychological sciences to the investigation of problems of a psychological nature or the active replication of completed research. In the form as it has developed in Paraguay, psychology can be better understood in the profile of an applied profession that like as a basic science. To explore the most significant aspects that concern this problem, the article offers a study of psychology as a science in Paraguay from the perspective of published research. The first part of the article discusses the implications of scientific activity in psychology. The second one presents two aspects that are directly relevant to the recognition of both the quality and strength of the national psychology as a basic science: a) On the one hand there is a very brief review on the psychological publications that are currently available and b) An analysis of the international visibility of paraguayan psychology as can be recognized from the publications of books and journals included in some of the major databases that offer full-text articles. Closes the paper a discussion of the problems that concern the scientific research of psychology in Paraguay, according to information contained in previous publications.
