Abstract

GOMES, Gil  and  SOARES, Adríana. Diferencia de género con relación al desempeño académico en estudiantes de nivel básico. Altern. psicol. [online]. 2013, vol.17, n.28, pp. 106-118. ISSN 1405-339X.

This study applied quantitative research methods to a sample of 57 6th and 7th graders of both sexes, ages 10 years and 10 months to 14 years and 3 months, enrolled in 2 private schools in Rio de Janeiro, in order to investigate school performance, associating the students' performance levels to intelligence and self-efficacy variables. Both the Self-efficacy Assessment Script and BPR-5's Verbal Reasoning Test (Form A) were used as tools, as well as Portuguese and writing school tests scores. Although no differences were found between boys' and girls' performances, findings showed that the girls' results were connected to both their intelligence and self-efficacy beliefs, while the boys' depended solely upon their self-efficacy beliefs.

Keywords : self-efficacy; gender; academic performance; intelligence.
