PIZZINATO, Adolfo  y  CASTELLA SARRIERA, Jorge. Ethnic and nacional identity and social competence on schools of Porto Alegre (Brazil). Aletheia [online]. 2004, n.19, pp. 07-20. ISSN 1413-0394.

This studyng aims at identifying how immigrant children differ from their non immigrant peers concerning social competence and ethnical and national identity. The sample was composed by students from public and private schools of Porto Alegre (Brazil) (32 immigrant children and theirs classmates, in a total of 575 students, male and female). We adapted to this research the Revised Class Play with the objective to evaluate the social competence; besides, an instrument to evaluate self attribution of ethnic and national identity was created. The data obtained at this investigation revealed the existence of different profiles between the groups, with the perception of immigrant children as being more isolated and less aggressive and sociable than their classmates. The investigation also revealed an important tendency of identity’s hybridization within both groups, indicating an adaptive process by the immigrants and maintenance of the ethnical migratorial roots of the state of Rio Grande do Sul through the other participants.

Palabras clave : Immigration; Social competence; Ethnical identity.
