Abstract

MAGALHAES, Mauro de Oliveira et al. Patterns of retirement adjustment. Aletheia [online]. 2004, n.19, pp. 57-68. ISSN 1413-0394.

The study investigated the experience of transition to retirement in the subjective perspective of the persons experiencing it. Twenty retired workers were interview in the period of eighteen months after disengagement of work activities. The interview followed pre-structured topics that approached the personal meaning of work, the decision to retire, expectations, life projects, and changes in the aspects of family, finances, health, leisure and occupation. The interviews were transcript in the original language of participants and analyzed with qualitative methodology. The results showed variations in satisfaction and adjustment in the initial period of retirement. These variations are suggested to be the result of individual differences in skills for redefine and rearrange roles and activities.
