Abstract

RAIMUNDO, Raquel Catarina Proença  and  PINTO, Maria Alexandra Penedo Marques. Stress and coping strategies in children and adolescents in the school context. Aletheia [online]. 2006, n.24, pp. 09-19. ISSN 1413-0394.

This exploratory study analyses the relation between peer conflict stressor and coping strategies in 443 Portuguese children and adolescents, from the 5th until the 9th grades. Data was collected with self-report questionnaires for peer conflict stressor (QAESSCEP, Raimundo, 2005) and coping strategies (SCSI, Ryan-Wenger, 1990). Significant differences were found in coping frequency and efficacy, regarding sex and age; also for stress intensity, regarding sex. Socio-demographic variables predicted the variables analysed in this study. The results support the need for prevention and intervention programmes in schools.
