For centuries, in western society, affiliation was linked to the thought of the patriarchate, where the father was the head of the family constituted by his wife and offspring. The family, in the present time, can only be considered under configurations that extend from single parenthood to same sex couples. As to homosexuals, science has provided the perpetuation of stigmas concerning a supposed perverted personality, and only in the last decades we have seen speech alterations pointing to constructed roles, and not instinctive ones anymore, like the social-affective paternity, that gives responsibility not only to biological motivations for the construction of affection. In the discussions that debate the homosexuals" right to adoption, the conjecture that the homosexual cannot and does not want to have children has been losing ground. In Brazil it is legally possible for a homosexual to adopt a child, which demonstrates the impediments are moral - reflections of a society that, even though it is changing its concepts, it is doing so slowly.
