GUARESCHI, Neuza Maria de Fátima; STRENZEL, Janaina Claudia  e  BENNEMANN, Thais. Who is apt?: Adoption practice and identity markers. Aletheia [online]. 2007, n.25, pp. 163-176. ISSN 1413-0394.

This article aims at discussing the adoption practice from statistical data presented in the Web site of Justiça da Infância e Juventude do Estado do Rio Grande do Sul, concerning age, skin color, particularities and syndromes of children and adolescents who are considered apt to be adopted. Besides statistical figures of this population, the Web site also informs about preferences of people entitled to adopt in relation to those characteristics. From the statistical analysis of data on both prospect adoption children and adopters’ preferences, we have problematized the production of either lower or higher probability of adoption of apt children and adolescents. We have used here the theoretical comprehension of identity markers of the Cultural Studies. The discussion of these data has evidenced that, in the adoption practice, aptitude refers to the degree of proximity of this population to standards set by society.
