Abstract

SILVA DE SOUZA, Mayra; NUNES BAPTISTA, Makilim  and  DA SILVA ALVES, Gisele Aparecida. Family support and mental health: validity evidence based on relations between variables. Aletheia [online]. 2008, n.28, pp. 32-44. ISSN 1413-0394.

The present study had the objective of searching for validity evidence based on relations to other variables among the Inventário de Percepção de Suporte Familiar (IPSF) and the Goldberg’s General Health Questionnaire (GHQ). 530 students from a private university in SP, aging from 17 to 54 years old participated of this research. In order to assess the perception of family support the IPSF was used and GHQ was used to assess mental health. As a result, the majority of the dimensions in both instruments were significantly correlated. This result indicates that the IPSF may be considered an accurate instrument when assessing the perception of family support. In a second analysis, differences between gender, race and economical level related to family support and mental health were found.

Keywords : Family support; Mental health; Validity evidences.
