The purpose of this study was to describe the use of criteria to diagnose and treat school-aged children with ADHD by mental health professionals, who attended in private offices in Vitoria/ES. The participants included 10 neurologists, 10 psychiatrics, 10 psychologists, who were interviewed in their offices. The results showed that the diagnosis of ADHD was primarily based on the parent’s interview, showing no adherence to the criteria recommended by the specialized literature on this subject. Despite a recognized need to combine medication intervention with others type of therapy specially the psychotherapy, the majority of participants adopted medication as the principal form of treatment and don’t work together as a team.
