Abstract

LIMA, Cláudia Pietrângelo  and  CARVALHO, Cristina Vilela de. Fibromyalgia: a psychological approach. Aletheia [online]. 2008, n.28, pp. 146-158. ISSN 1413-0394.

Fibromyalgia is a syndrome characterized by muscle and bone pain in certain areas of the body, with a clinical diagnosis, and without specific laboratorial alterations. This work is a case study with a 43-year-old female patient, user of the public health services, and who was referred to psychological care by her doctor after a diagnosis of fibromyalgia. With this study, we seek to analyze the contributions that psychology, through brief psychotherapy of psychoanalytical orientation, can bring to fibromyalgia patients. It was observed that the psychotherapeutic process could enable psychic development in the patient, promoting her identity as an integral person, opening other possibilities besides the disease for her life, and thus aiding in the improvement and control of fibromyalgia pains.
