The main goal of this paper is to discuss the basis and the development of psychoanalysis with couples and families throughout its half century of existence. The article intends to present the main influences within the couple and family psychoanalysis field, the publications and clinical researches developed, emphasizing the Brazilian work done within this field of specialty.
