This study concerned itself with the assessment of cognitive functions in an elderly man who presented complaints about loss of memory and depressive symptoms. Qualitative and quantitative analyses were performed in order to verify if the problems that were related by the patients comprised primarily a degenerative process or depressive symptoms. Neuropsychological assessements enabled a differential diagnosis of dementia and depression. The study prompts the conclusion that a sequential assessment is essential in order ascertain the pathogenesis of the cognitive impairments.
