Abstract

MARTINI, Talu Andréa Dartora De; PICCININI, Cesar Augusto  and  GONCALVES, Tonantzin Ribeiro. Indicators of couvade syndrome of first time fathers during pregnancy. Aletheia [online]. 2010, n.31, pp. 121-136. ISSN 1413-0394.

The study investigated indicators of couvade syndrome in primiparous fathers during the wives’ pregnancy. Participated 30 couples (20 to 35 years old), that they were in different periods of pregnancy. The expectant fathers and their wives answered an open-ended interview that investigated the father’s and mother’s perception on the couvade indicators. The content analysis indicated that more of the fathers’ half showed physical (appetite increase, preference for some food, vomit episodes) or emotional indicators of the couvades syndrome (nervousness and bad mood). The fathers that lived the second trimester of pregnancy reported more symptoms than other participants. The presence of indicators of couvade syndrome among these fathers indicated the complexity of the transition to fatherhood, as well as the need of interventions that involve the father’s feelings during the gestation of his son/daughter.
