Abstract

BENTES, Ana Cláudia de Oliveira; PEDROSO, Janari da Silva  and  MACIEL, Carlos Alberto Batista. The elderly in long-stay institutions: a literature review. Aletheia [online]. 2012, n.38-39, pp. 196-205. ISSN 1413-0394.

This article addresses the subject of the elderly in Long-Stay Institutions, in regards to successfully aging and quality of life. The bibliography includes articles published between the years 2006 and 2012, and an article published in 2001; the databases from Virtual Health Library - Latin-American Union Psychology Entities - Brazil. By analyzing the articles, two areas of concentration were identified: the institutionalized elderly; and the process of institutionalization of a dependent elderly by the family. The results indicate that the institutionalization of the elderly is a matter of a broad debate since the Long-Stay Institutions, on one hand, has the function of protecting and caring, and on the other hand, of establishing an adaptation of the elderly built in feelings of memories and losses by breaking family and socialites.

Keywords : Elderly; Institutionalization; Quality of life.
