Abstract

SANTANA, Vanessa Souza  and  PERES, Rodrigo Sanches. Losses and gains: understanding the psychological repercussions of breast cancer treatment. Aletheia [online]. 2013, n.40, pp. 31-42. ISSN 1413-0394.

This study aimed to analyze psychological repercussions of breast cancer treatment from the reports presented voluntarily by women during the sessions of a supportive group. It is a qualitative study with documental methodological design and naturalistic approach. The corpus was composed by 18 sessions of a supportive group which participated 93 women. Saturation criterion was adopted for the corpus composition and thematic content analysis was used for the corpus exploration. The results show that, in addition to negative psychological repercussions which reflect losses associated with the femininity symbolic sphere, breast cancer treatment may also result in positive psychological repercussions, capable of a better understanding using the "post-growth traumatic" concept. New studies specifically devoted to this subject, however, are needed.

Keywords : Psycho-oncology; Breast neoplasms; Posttraumatic growth.
