ARGIMON, Irani I. de Lima et al. The intensity of depression and hospitalization of alcoholic patients. Aletheia [online]. 2013, n.40, pp. 102-110. ISSN 1413-0394.

The existence of an association between depression and alcoholic addiction is based on theoretical, clinical and epidemiological data. This study aimed to investigate the association between care regime and intensity of depression in alcoholic individuals. The Beck Depression Inventory - BDI has been administered to 239 alcohol dependent, with these 110 outpatients and 129 inpatients, the last being tested after seven days of abstinence. The result of the chi-square and logistic regression were significant, demonstrating the presence of association between the variables. The results support the hypothesis that the co-occurrence of depressive symptoms and dependence accelerates the trajectory to hospitalization, although showing a probabilistic effect only for the fact that the alcoholics are hospitalized since the hospitalization itself can exacerbate depressive symptoms. It has been pointed out the importance of depression being a therapeutic focus in the treatment of alcoholics.
