Abstract

PASSOS, Maria Consuêlo; FONSECA, Célia Maria Souto Maior de Souza  and  LIMA, Albenise de Oliveira. The challenge of becoming a mother of multiple babies: reflections on the process of children's singling. Aletheia [online]. 2013, n.40, pp. 146-158. ISSN 1413-0394.

This work discusses the role of being a mother of multiple babies conceived by assisted reproduction, considering its difficulties in answering simultaneously to their primary needs. It approaches such context by observing some of the impasses regarding parents' search for this reproductive modality and its repercussions on birth, receiving and caring for the babies. Then, it discusses the process of becoming a mother of several babies and required conditions for them to mature. At last, it highlights distinct aspects which must be considered when it comes to singling, so that the mother has the possibility to differentiate each child, which is a key point to subjectivation process. It is a theoretical study based on Winnicott's conception on mother-baby relation, specifically on primary maternal concern, on the continuity of existing, illusion and disillusion, among other concepts.

Keywords : Multiple births; Mother-baby relation; Assisted reproduction.
