Abstract

LUZ, Felipe Quinto da  and  OLIVEIRA, Margareth da Silva. Cognitive-behavioral therapy of obesity: a literature review. Aletheia [online]. 2013, n.40, pp. 159-173. ISSN 1413-0394.

We present a review of the literature published in Portuguese for the treatment of obesity through cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). This is a bibliographic review, of published articles in last ten years (2003-2013), which was researched in the literature indexed in bibliographic databases using the following keywords in health sciences: obesity, cognitive therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy and psychology. We performed a brief introduction on the topic of obesity, the medical, social and psychological related aspects and then analyzed the results of empirical studies published on the treatment of obesity through CBT. We conclude that a problem to be solved is the issue of weight regain after treatment completion. We also conclude that there is empirical evidence of the effectiveness of CBT in the treatment of obese people resulting in improvements in physical, psychological and emotional aspects.

Keywords : Obesity; Cognitive therapy; Cognitive-behavioral therapy; Psychology.
