JESUS, Luciana Oliveira de; SCARPARO, Helena Beatriz K.  and  LERMEN, Helena Salgueiro. Professional challenges in the field of health in the penitentiary system: dilemmas in the interface between health and security. Aletheia [online]. 2013, n.41, pp. 39-52. ISSN 1413-0394.

This study, related to the field of health in the Rio Grande do Sul penitentiary system, is aimed at learning more about the experiences of health professionals that act on prison health teams and the challenges faced by them in making health initiatives effective within a space that enforces punitive actions. Eight narrative interviews were conducted with penitentiary health professionals. The analyses were developed according to the Schütze model. As results, it was shown that the academic formation of the majority of professionals was geared towards SUS (Single Health System) and that most had field experience in the area of public policies prior to working in prisons. Participant also showcased the dilemmas involved in relationships between the security and health teams and the strategies used to ensure the implementation of health initiatives. Thus, the study showed differences and dialogues between health and safety in the context of health policies within prisons.
