Presents, from the systemic family therapy, a case study of a family with one member identified as related to alcohol abuse problems. Has been aimed at understanding the development of the symptom (use and abuse of alcohol) feeds back the family homeostasis from a case study. Data collection was conducted from psychotherapy occurred during 20 sessions in a clinical school of Higher Education Institution. The study showed that alcohol abuse develops as a family symptom to cover dysfunction or conflicts in relationships. In the case of the family studied, the symptom covered the dysfunctional communication. The desire to search for the withdrawal occurred, but maintaining it was uncertain since it was required for the homeostasis of the system. From the intervention can be considered that changes in the family are possible, was the definition and demarcation of the boundaries of the system and subsystem family, provided there is reflection, construction of new meanings and transformations in the way of functioning of the family as a whole. This study achieved an improvement in the expression of affect, openness to assertive communication, understanding of responsibility in the family system.
