Abstract

The academic expectations of college students in the first year of higher education was related to a better adaptation to the university and to a better academic performance especially during the first year of college, which is why it is important to know what students hope to find when they enroll into college. The methodology of focus groups was used with 13 students aged 18-24 years old. Eight students were female. The discussions were recorded and later transcribed. Data analysis was performed according to the method of content analysis. Eight categories were identified and extracted from, exposing the main results that are presented in relation to remuneration, personal and professional fulfillment, trot, quality of faculty, disciplines, infrastructure, family acceptance and use of the course as a second option. The results were discussed, and that allowed thinking possible strategies of intervention that aim for a better performance from students in the college context.
