SCHAKAROWSKI, Fabiana Brum  e  OLIVEIRA, Viviane Ziebell de. The (im)possible body through surgical intervention: a review on body image, obesity and bariatric surgery. Aletheia [online]. 2014, n.45, pp. 177-189. ISSN 1413-0394.

The body dissatisfaction leads more people to change their appearance. The motivations of obese individuals for bariatric surgery have mainly focused on ownership of idealized body image, based on social returns, aesthetic standards and immediate desire to change lives. However the psychic process of building the body image is complex, extending throughout life. 28 articles on the subject were reviewed, subjected to content analysis, and found six thematic categories, identifying a gap regarding the updating of body image in the psyche after bariatric surgery. The establishment of a line of research that engages the issue of body image may contribute to the consolidation of the knowledge about the topic and subsidize a clinical practice more consistent and resolute.

Palavras-chave : Body image; Obesity; Bariatric surgery.
