Abstract

PEREIRA, Mônica Cecília Santana et al. Consumer rights to information on food labels: Perspective of professionals involved in public policy. Aletheia [online]. 2019, vol.52, n.1, pp. 85-101. ISSN 1413-0394.

The labels can contribute to the exercise of the decision autonomy of the citizen in the choice of food. The objective was to understand the perspective of professionals involved in public food policies on the consumer's right to information on food labels. It is a descriptive-exploratory social research, with a qualitative approach that interviewed, individually, 15 social actors from the public sectors, including the regulatory sector; civil society; industrial and academia and reviewed memoirs of the General and Nutrition Labeling Review Working Group meetings. The result was expressed in three thematic categories: Food Labels: Information and Awareness Tool, Food Labels Versus Advertising, and Food Labels and the Food Guide. The evidence produced can support professionals who act directly or indirectly with the consumer to devise strategies that help them to choose food using food labels as a tool to promote health.

Keywords : Food labeling; Health promotion; Healthy diet.
