Empathy is connected to affective approach, fewer aggressive behaviors and better mental health conditions. The aim was to identify an association between empathy in both parents and their parental practices in their children's education, in 231 fathers and mothers from several Brazilian states. Participants responded online to a sociodemographic questionnaire, to the Parental Practices and Styles Scale (PPSS), and to the Empathy Inventory (EI). The results showed that perspective taking was associated with emotional support, autonomy incentive, intrusiviness and behavioral supervision. Likewise, affective sensibility was associated with emotional support and behavioral supervision. However, interpersonal flexibility was negatively correlated with each of the PPSS factors and, also, with the total scale. The results show that low scores on EI and on factors related to parents emotional regulation indicates that parents see themselves less engaged in healthy PP.
