Family definitions will originate under the influence of various social and cultural aspects, which are unstable and changeable over time. The scholarship recipients of the Biological Sciences Initiation Program (PIBID) carried out research at the public school in the municipality of Canoas/ RS in 2016, in order to understand the family perceptions of the students, and to promote the debate about the new family organization. Family drawings and conversations were used to collect. The drawings revealed the existence of different family configurations, both of the traditional model and of the single-parent family model. We observed the conception of the family in regards to the coexistence, the network of members that are related, and also the quality of the relationship. The children's perception of the family can help educators understand how the family system can influence the perception of the world.
