ABSTRACT This research evaluated stress and coping strategies in students at a public university in northern Mozambique. It was based on a qualitative approach and involved 28 students of both sexes, who were attending the licentiate degree in teaching of Philosophy, who responded to a semi-structured interview. Content analysis of the collected information revealed the predominance of stress symptoms of a psychological nature and several academic stressors, namely: overload of material and academic work, financial and economic difficulties, difficulties in assimilating the material, poor interpersonal relationships, family situations, poor performance of teachers and academic failure. To manage perceived stress, students primarily resort to palliative strategies. The findings emphasize the need to design and implement institutional policies to promote students' mental health, centered on stress prevention and psychological counseling.
