Abstract

NOVAES, Joana V.  and  VILHENA, Junia de. From swan to ugly duckling: on the relationship of woman, beauty and ugliness. Interações [online]. 2003, vol.8, n.15, pp. 9-36. ISSN 1413-2907.

This article deals with the prejudice against people, specially women, who are ugly. Historically associated with beautiness, women are the ones who suffer the most. The authors discuss how socially acceptable it became to discriminate ugly people. Taking obesity or mere fatness as the paradigm of ugliness, the authors point out how intolerant society became of those who deviate from what the body culture has established as normal. The article is illustrated with some speeches that one of the authors has collected on previous researches.

Keywords : Woman; Beauty; Ugliness; Fatness; Social regulation; Prejudice.
