Abstract

SEQUEIRA, Vania Conselheiro. Why doesn’t the jailer let the prison doors wide open?. Interações [online]. 2004, vol.9, n.18, pp. 61-74. ISSN 1413-2907.

This article is a reflection on a topical issue: urban violence and the handling criminals. It is also an invitation to critically engage with recent discussions regarding the lowering of the age of majority, increasing of length of penalties and the use of capital punishment. Following Zygmunt Bauman, I discuss globalization, the feelings of insecurity generated by it, and also the segregation logic that justifies this insecurity policy. The public and private spaces are problematized as are the links between the individual and the community. I propose a rupture in this segregation logic and argue that it would be more appropriate to invest in strengthening social ties and the community.

Keywords : Urban violence; Community; Prison; Symbolic law; Crime.
