Abstract

MARGOTTO, Lilian Rose. Psychology, education and exclusion: some reasons for the use of aptitude tests in the 1920s. Interações [online]. 2004, vol.9, n.18, pp. 153-175. ISSN 1413-2907.

This article analyzes the arguments for the use of psychological tests as instruments for measuring students’ learning ability presented in a journal published by the government of the state of São Paulo from 1928 to 1930. The issue of finding in the students themselves the causes of their school failure is still current. Here, I aim to understand the origins of such notion and the ways in which this notion was conveyed to the teachers of the state of São Paulo. In sum, this article seeks to discuss the justification which allowed the naturalization through science and psychology of a series of problems schools underwent at the time.

Keywords : Psychological tests; School failure; Public school; Aptitudes; Individual differences.
