Abstract

LEITAO, Carla Faria; ABREU, Rosane dos Santos  and  NICOLACI-DA-COSTA, Ana Maria. Professionals adrift: educators and psychotherapists in the network society. Interações [online]. 2005, vol.10, n.19, pp. 151-174. ISSN 1413-2907.

The popularization of information technologies in general and of the internet in particular has caused deep transformations in contemporary professional practices. This paper discusses the impacts of such transformations on educators and psychologists. We present the results of two qualitative investigations in which we interviewed teachers and psychotherapists. We asked them how they felt after the arrival of the Internet in their students" or patients" daily life. The main results of both investigations reveal interviewees" disorientation when faced with their students" or patients" new behavior, their generalized feeling of loss of control, their view of traditional knowledge and techniques as inadequate work tools, and above all, the anxiety and conflicts they face regarding the loss of their traditional and solid professional identities. We argue that the construction of new professional identities necessarily involves an in-depth analysis of these feelings and conflicts.

Keywords : Internet; Educators; Psychotherapists; Identities; Conflict.
