Abstract

This research has as its objective the assessment of the cognitive capacity called verbal reasoning in high school students. It deals with our capacity to express ideas using verbal symbols. The random sample was composed of 658 high school students from public and private schools in the city of Fortaleza in the state of Ceará (Brazil), while the instrument used was the Verbal Reasoning Test developed by Andriola & Pasquali (1995). By using analysis of variance (ANOVA) it was possible to compare the variables: sex, age and academic level with the performance on the Verbal Reasoning Test, using the software SPSS for Windows (V. 6.1).
