Abstract

MARTINS, Alberto Mesaque  and  NASCIMENTO, Adriano Roberto Afonso do. "Kill the old man, be born again": social representation of men and construction of masculinities in the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God. Estud. psicol. (Natal) [online]. 2021, vol.26, n.3, pp. 273-285. ISSN 1413-294X.  http://dx.doi.org/10.22491/1678-4669.20210026.

Considering the centrality of religious life in Brazilian culture and the changes demands imposed by the conversion experience, this study aims to analyse the social representations of men constructed and disseminated among members of the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (UCKG). Based on the perspective of the Social Representations Theory, we interviewed 12 men, members of the UCKG with ages between 19 and 62 years old. The narratives were analysed through Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis. The results reveal that the conversion experience divides the subjects' biography and the converts engage in an intense process of reorganization of the way they perceive themselves and perceive others, demanding a reconstruction of their personal and social identities, including the way they exercise their masculinities.

Keywords : masculinity; religiosity; social psychology; social representation.
