Abstract

MENDES, Kíssila Teixeira; RONZANI, Telmo Mota  and  PAIVA, Fernando Santana de. "All because of crack": a study of the perceptions and meanings of drugs in the homeless population. Estud. psicol. (Natal) [online]. 2021, vol.26, n.3, pp. 311-322. ISSN 1413-294X.  http://dx.doi.org/10.22491/1678-4669.20210029.

This article aims to understand the conceptions about drugs in homeless population. To this end, it proposes a debate on the relationship between the war against drugs, the criminalization of poverty and the right to the city. The methodological procedure consists of five months of particip nt observation and six interviews with men in street situations that are drug users based on the method of life history, analyzed later with the thematic content analysis. The results indicate that drugs appear as the main element of life stories. There is also a reproduction of ideological discourses on drugs, with an individualistic, moralizing and stigmatizing content. The research shows the valuation of crucial categories of bourgeois society, such as work and consumption, and indicates, rather than limits of public policies for the population in street situation, the corporate limits.

Keywords : homeless; drugs; poverty; stigma; public policy.
