Abstract

CALDANA, Regina Helena Lima. Children and their education by the family at the beginning of the century: authorithy, limits and daily life. Temas psicol. [online]. 1998, vol.6, n.2, pp. 87-103. ISSN 1413-389X.

The difficulties felt now in the children's education have been attributed to the prevalence of an "modem" educational model that would have been predominant in the second half of this century. But historical studies point to the beginning of the century as a moment of great transformations in social and familiar relationships. This is the period focused in this work through a qualitative analysis of twenty interviews that describe the infancy of persons bom between 1896 and 1919. The analysis evidenced a adult-child relationship characterized by obedience, but also showed many moments when the adult's attitudes indicated concern in satisfying children's desires, limited by scarceness ogods and a of daily life marked by parsimony and hard work. This picture shows a period when aspects of the child's education that would become predominant in the second half of the century by the emergency of the consumption society were already announced.
