The process of school inclusion in visually impaired children is discussed and a project (Prodevi) aiming the prepation and following up of this process is presented. The "school groups"that are the main strategy of this project comprise: a) joint work of blind and low vision children; b) a schedule of school-like activities with objectives in the áreas of cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional and psychomotor development; c) systematic observation of the sessions and semestral individual assessments. The development of the project in the period 1995-1998 (1st semester) is described and some results are presented (more attention and persistence in the tasks, more comprehension and respect to rules, beginning of literacy, acquisition of the concept of number, more self-confidence and sociability, more respect to limits). The following aspects are discussed: a) identifícation of factors responsible for the observed changes; and b) difficulties of the inclusion of visually impaired children in regular school
