Abstract

BOMTEMPO, Edda. Play, fantasy and learning. Temas psicol. [online]. 1999, vol.7, n.1, pp. 51-56. ISSN 1413-389X.

This paper deals with the importance of toys as a cultural object and as a mediator of relationships among the persons involved in the play or even in solitary play. The appropriation of the toy-object occurs in many ways through reproductions and role playing of everyday scenes. The toy is like a cultural piece in the hands of the children. The manipulation leads children to action and representation, to act and to imagine. The paper also calls attention to the qualities of a good toy and to the adequate toys for the children's levei of development. It dismisses wrong ideas about some toys and plays such as video games, war toys and super heroes. It shows the apropriation of the object through its manipulation and its resulting modification.

Keywords : play; make-believe play; culture.
