This paper has analyzed twenty-six thesis that showed some concern with psychological issues among those presented at the Medical School of Bahia during the 19th century. In regard to the methodology used, only one thesis presented an experimental design. The themes that appeared most frequently were related to psychopathology. About their intellectual influences, the most frequently cited authors were Morel, Fere and Esquirol, all of them alienists. Wundt, Binet and Freud were also cited. The data has pointed out concerns about psychopathology, a pre-experimental research process and a great closeness to European production.
