Abstract

SOUZA FILHO, Edson A. de. Social représentations of individuais, groups and inter-group relations: a meta-analytical approach. Temas psicol. [online]. 2000, vol.8, n.3, pp.269-285. ISSN 1413-389X.

In order to verify the importance of the meta-analysis of the social représentations, we observed family members' représentations (FR) and their relationships with minority groups représentations (MGR). We compared groups according to their ethnic and religious self-identification, and also to a social-economic situation. The subjects were Christians/Catholics and Jews from the middle class (N=148), and Afro-American, crossbred people, white and undefined from the lower class (N=179). We asked them to report their family memories and to perform a self-introduction to a Muslim or to a Buddhist. So, while the FR in family situations were associated with an indifference/hostility towards the MGR, the FR as autonomous or ethnically recognized individuais were dissociated, mainly when their own group was a minority, no matter what the social-economic situation. The results demonstrated the importance of meta-analysis of the social representation, which could also include the simultaneous observation of multiple objects of representation, mainly those associated with aspects related to the individual, to the social-cultural group, and to the collective lives

Keywords : social représentations; meta-analysis; social identity.
