BICHARA, Ilka Dias. Boys and girls' play: segregation and stereotype in make-believe epysodes. Temas psicol. [online]. 2001, vol.9, n.1, pp. 19-28. ISSN 1413-389X.

As fanciful a game can be, a powerful reality agent is present: the gender stereotype. Boys play games which are considered appropriate for boys, while girls play games which are considered appropriate for girls. It is also common to see the preference for partners of the same sex to constitute the groups. The investigation of how gender questions influence the development and the possible variations which result from sociocultural particularities has been one of our research issues in the last few years. With this aim, we have been registering the free activity of boys and girls in two communities located in a region of the Sergipe State, and with special cultural particularities: the Xocô indians and the Mocambo blacks. The results show that the acquisition and development of gender role are important aspects of development and interrelate with sociocultural and situational variables.

Palavras-chave : stereotype; segregation; gender; make-believe games.
